Share a vault with a team

A vault is shared by sharing its file and adding each person as a member. Every member then opens it with their own username and password.

Pick a location every member can read and write:

  • A server over SSH — create the vault with the SSH location, for example on a host the team already uses. Each member needs an SSH account there with write access to the vault’s directory. See Remote vaults over SSH.
  • A synchronized folder or network share — create the vault with a Local path inside it. The directory must be on a file system that supports hard links, which the save lock relies on.
  1. Open the vault and press u on Projects. Users lists the members, sorted by username, with the key derivation of each password; you are marked (you).

  2. Press n. In Add member, type the Username, a Password twice and choose the Key derivation (it starts on the default of the vault). The password follows the same rules as when creating a vault.

  3. Press Enter. The status bar says Added ana to the vault; the member is saved with the next automatic save.

  4. Give the new member their username and initial password through a safe channel, and the location of the vault.

  5. The new member adds the vault with Open existing (o on the home screen), logs in, and changes their password: u, then e.

On Users, e opens Change password, always for yourself. Type your Current password, then the New password twice, and choose the Key derivation. Leave the new password blank to change only the key derivation. The change is saved with the next save.

Changing a password re-encrypts only your private key: the other members and the vault key are not affected.

  1. On Users, select the member and press d.

  2. Confirm with Remove (the dialog starts on Cancel).

  3. The vault key is rotated and the vault is saved at once: the status bar shows Removing member....

The last member cannot be removed. If the vault was saved elsewhere with conflicting changes, the removal is refused until they are resolved.

Removing yourself asks a second time, Leave the vault, since it ends your access. Once removed, the vault closes and the home screen says You left the vault.

o on Projects opens Vault options, shared by every member:

  • Default unix group (under Deploy) — the group given to deployed files of projects that set none. Blank for none.
  • Key derivation (under Security) — the preset proposed for new members. It does not change any existing password.

Enter saves the options that changed and goes back.
